September
2008 The First Grade students
are continuing their lessons from Let's Discover Computers. They are being
reminded of the many different parts of the computer: Mo Mouse, Kiki Keyboard,
Monty Monitor, CPU (Computer Brain), Peter Printer, Dizzy Disk Drive, Susie
Software, plus many of the keys on the keyboard, like Space Bar, Return or Enter
Key, the Arrow Keys, the Escape Key, and even the Caps Lock Key. Ask your child
to find these keys on the keyboard for you. The First Graders just started
reading their first workbook. We will be learning a lot about input, processing,
and output.

October 2008
The First Graders have started to read their
first computer text book.
It's difficult at times to keep their
attention. They have read about the
different parts of the computer.
They are studying about input, processing, and output.
We're going to have "A Birthday Party"
using our workbooks! It should be great fun! The 1st graders have also been
typing their classroom words, finding a picture to go with the word, saving, and
printing. They are doing a SUPER job!

November
2008 Your interesting first
graders have discovered what hardware is and more about the keyboard and the
mouse using their text books. Output and input devices was another topic that
your children read about. A file was created for each of these topics. "Input,
Processing, and Output" was what the first graders studied next. Making a cake
with batter, putting it into an oven to cook, and ending up with a cake are
examples of input, processing, and output. A video about the First Thanksgiving
was shown and the boys and girls were amazed! It wasn't easy living way
back then. They sure love it when we do words for the month on Kid Pix 4. Ask your
child to describe this program. It's fun! Happy Thanksgiving to you all!

December 2008
We finished the file November words 2 and
Decembers words 1--classroom words. Some of the children are having some
difficulty keeping up with the rest of the class as far as getting these
assignments done during class. Some of the class was trying to finish November
words and others were working on December words and finishing them. Hopefully,
those children having trouble will learn to focus more and get quicker with
their assignments. The children enjoyed creating a Christmas card for you
parents and guardians. Have a Very Merry Christmas!

January
2009 It was very difficult to
get back into the swing of things after the Christmas break, The students are
busy beavers working in their text books learning about Word Processing. They
will learn how to change the size of font and how to edit a document using
inserting and deleting text. The 1st graders are also typing up the January
classroom words using Kid Pix 3, finding pictures for each word, and saving this
file. We use Kid Pix 4 a lot and several students have difficulty saving their
file and placing it in the correct place. Then some of them end up doing
an assignment over because it was not saved correctly. Ask your child to tell
you the steps in saving their work. This will reinforce what is being done in
Computer class. Thank you for your cooperation! Every little bit helps! Enjoy
the winter!

March 2009
We worked in the text book and finished the
desktop publishing project which was our "Birth Certificate"! Have you seen them
out in the hall?? We discussed and flew through the text book on Databases. The
students discovered these words: field, record, file, sorting, and query. They
took a quiz of queries by looking at a "Clown" file on the network. Many of them
understood the queries. (Queries are questions!)

April 2009
It was quite difficult getting back into the
swing of things after our Spring Break. But the students finally settled down
and got back to work on the computers. They get so excited about doing things on
the computer. AND they are usually pretty good at it, too!!! Spreadsheets is the
hot topic we're studying this month. Ask them to identify what is in a certain
cell in a spreadsheet. They should be able to do that. We learned about cell
addresses and what they are. The workbook is almost done. Then we'll do some fun
stuff on Kid Pix.
