2007 The Second Graders are learning about the output
devices--monitor and printer. We were going on a Class Picnic!!
Our workbook will take us there! We are continuing lessons from the Let's
Discover Computers book. The children have played such games as Mouse-O (like
Bingo) and Computer Dominoes. It's interesting how many of the students have
played Bingo and/or Dominoes. Try these regular games at home and see how much
they enjoy them!

November 2007
This month, we are reading about the cursor
and spaces and indents. The children typed a poem called "Directions to the
Class Picnic". They played a game called "Spaces and Tabs" using cards with tabs and numbers. Yes, one of
the two children won each time they played. But they loved it! They worked on an
assignment where they changed the size of the font using the word "Basket".
Editing a Document was fun because after copying 5 sentences, each child had to
go to someone else's computer and correct their document. It was a hoot!! Happy
Thanksgiving to you all!

December 2007
The 2nd graders are learning about Word
Processing. Some of the students have had some difficulty in finishing
assignments from November since there was a lot of sickness going around. These
assignments are just now being completed. Inserting Text and Copying and Pasting Text will be
the next two topics to be studied. Have a Very Merry Christmas!!

January 2008
The cute little 2nd graders finished a file
where they had to insert words. Then they learned how to copy and paste. Step 1:
highlight, Step 2: copy, Step 3: cursor, Step 4: paste. Ask you student to stand
and raise their hand and repeat these steps as they use their fingers to go from
top to bottom in the air. We are almost done with Word Processing. Next, your
child will go into Desktop Publishing, software used to create magazines and
newspapers. Your child will be designing an Award by physically placing the
three parts on construction paper and then filling them in with the correct
text, headlines, and graphics. All of this will be entered into a template on
the computer using MS Words 2003. Enjoy the winter!

March 2008
The children learned about three terms in a
database--field, record, and file. They created a database on index cards and
then put the data into an MS Works file. They learned how to sort the database
and then how to print it with gridlines and field & record labels.

April 2008
2nd graders have investigated a spreadsheet
and how to create one in Excel 2003. The spreadsheet sure looks like a database
with a few differences. They discovered that spreadsheets work mostly with
data--adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing numbers. They created two
spreadsheets in Excel and were intrigued by putting in a formula. Hoorah! An
actual number appeared! They were pleasantly surprised!

May 2008
The 2nd graders finished up their workbooks
learning more about spreadsheets and how to make graphs. Then we worked in Kid
Pix 3 doing a project about Ants. Each one made a booklet about these little
creatures telling things like where they live, how they live, and what they eat.
Each page of the booklet is a verse of our Ant Chant sung to the tune of
"Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star". Ask your child to sing it to you! It is very
cute!! Enjoy the summer and be safe! See you next year as 3rd graders!!
