September 2008
The 3rd Graders have measured their hands to watch them grow. They can't
believe how their hands have grown in just a month. The children will start
keyboarding the 2nd semester in January, 2009. They seem excited about it! The
children are excited about "Holiday Parties throughout the Year" via their
workbook! They LOVE parties!

October
2008
The 3rd graders are busy completing workbook pages and just finished the first
section which was all about computers. Next, they studied Word Processing. Just for fun the students will be creating a Monster or a scary picture for
Halloween. We will put these up out in the hall if you'd like to see their
creations. They are great!

November 2008
This month the 3rd graders are studying Word
Processing. The children started by typing some sentences. After they created a
document called "Oh Calendar" from page 23, they learned about the cursor by
underlining and bolding a letter which was determined by using the arrow keys.
They played a game in their workbook called "Spaces and Tabs" and had a good
time with their partner. The 3rd graders started learning about the different
fonts and point sizes. They created a document using the word "snowflake"
changing the font point size. Editing a document was different in that they got
to go to another classmate's computer and fix the mistakes on a document,
learning about backspace and delete. This activity was fun! A rebus valentine
was used to Insert Text which they just started at the end of the month.
Hope all had a Great Thanksgiving!

December 2008
The children finished the file on page
27 which was about Inserting Text. They completed cutting and pasting riddles
from their workbook actually using a scissors and a glue stick. Next they did
the same thing on the computer using the tools--cut and paste. These smart 3rd
graders started the next unit in the workbook called Desktop Publishing. They
have really moved fast in their workbook as the class has not yet started
keyboarding. Have a Very Merry Christmas!!!

January 2009
The children in the 3rd grade will be
keyboarding the beginning of the 3rd quarter which will be January, 2009.
They are quite excited about it. It will take some time to get it all set up in
Type to Learn. But then they are off---keyboarding by placing their fingers on
the home row and listening to directions from the software program. This is a
very individualized program which can be easily adjusted. Encourage them at home
to keep their fingers on the home row. They have finished their layout sheet for
Desktop Publishing and will be putting it into a template using MS Word 2003.
This should be fun and take a little time as they will hopefully be using the
right fingers to keyboard now!

February 2009
The third graders continued to work on their
keyboarding. There were some students that were completing one Type to Learn
lesson each week! WOW!! Some of the older students don't do that much! Keep up
the pace! You are setting it for the rest of the school!! The 3rd graders
continued to work in their workbooks learning about databases. They learned
about three terms: field, record, and file. They learned that a field must be
unique. No two fields can be the same. However, the data in a database can be
the same. They created a database called "Parties09" using index cards. They had
to make up some of the data, which could be used more than once.

March 2009
The students continued working on the
"Parties09" database by putting all the fields and data into an MS Works 7 file.
This took several days to complete using their keyboarding skills. Once it was
on the computer, they learned how sort a database by one field. The 3rd graders
found out that a query is a question which can be answered by looking at a
database. They finished the end of databases in the workbook by taking a
true/false quiz.

April 2009
Studying about spreadsheets was begun this
month. A spreadsheet is composed of "rows that go across like this and columns
that go up and down like this!" Does this ring a bell, students? We stood and
faced one direction using our hands to motion across for a row and up & down for
a column. Hopefully, they will remember the definition for a row and a column. A
cell address is where a row and column intersect, just like the students having
their own home address. We played a game spelling words out using letters in a
spreadsheet and the letter's cell address. It was a riot, especially when
someone spelled a word wrong! That was O.K. though! Labels and Values were also
studied, labels being words and values being numbers. These wonderful children
were still busy beavers as they vigorously and enthusiastically keyboarded.

May 2009
In spreadsheets, the students learned about
formulas, what they are, and how to write one in Excel 2003. Remember, it must
start with a what?? Yes, you're right, an equal sign tells Excel that it's a
formula. The children finished studying about spreadsheets by creating a bar
graph and a pie graph or chart. They diligently continued keyboarding with some
of the students slowing down a little. That's because the letters were getting
harder. I sure enjoyed teaching your class this year! You were a delight! Have a
safe and fun summer!! See you next year as 4th graders!
