August 2008
The 4th graders started keyboarding right
away this year. I thought that they would keep up the pace of one lesson a week,
which they set for the whole school last year. Check the next month's for their
progress. They are a very interesting and enjoyable class. They seem to care a
lot about each other.

Some of the students seem to be completing
keyboarding lessons; while others are having a more difficult time. They are not
keeping up the same pace they started last year. This is O.K. as long as they
continue to complete lessons. Check their report card for the number of lessons
completed by mid-terms.

2008 The 4th graders are
keyboarding and trying to complete lessons. Some of them have asked to be put
back to the very beginning as they don't remember where the keys are. They
evidently forgot over the summer. This is O.K. as I want them to be successful
at keyboarding. If going back to the beginning helps them be successful, then
this is great!! It's all about your child and his/her experience at keyboarding. We
don't want him/her to hate computers! They will be typing
documents soon--even short little
ones-- to practice what
they've learned!!! Yippeee!!
We'll be taking A Cross-Country Trip
this year via our workbook!
Yes, we're traveling!

"The Cursor" was one of the workbook topics
that took the 4th graders on a trip. They wrote a letter to a friend named Tanya
asking her to feed their fish and telling her about all the places that they
were going to visit. Using the cursor and the arrow keys, the children found
several letters that had to be underlined and bolded because that's where the cursor
landed. It took some students a while to key in this assignment as it was a
rather lengthy letter. But it was good keyboarding practice. The Travel Game was
played using Tab and Indent cards. Page 27 lead the students to a fun assignment
and a pretty easy one, too! The children had to change the font point size of
the word "Adventure" and had to find 10 different fonts in which to type the
word "Adventure". They discovered that Wingdings is a very interesting font, all
symbols! Hope all had a Happy Thanksgiving!

This month they learned how to edit a
document by using the delete key and the backspace key. They got to go to
another computer and correct their classmate's assignment. They also inserted
text into a document from workbook page 30 using an MS Word 2003 template. These
industrious little 4th graders created a Christmas card for you using
Publisher03. I hope that you enjoyed their efforts. I know that I kept my sons' cards.
Have a Very Merry Christmas!!

This month, the excitable 4th graders will
be Copying and Pasting text using the song "Oh, my Darling Clementine". This
song is taken from their workbooks page 32. We will be singing it before we
start the activity on the computer. Didn't you know that we sing in computer
class? Your beautiful darlings continue to keyboard using Type to Learn. Several
of them are already in Type to Learn advanced, the 2nd time through the program.
I was right when I told them that they would be whipping right through the
lessons. They are expressing such a grand feeling of accomplishment! Yeah for
them!!!

The students used the Laptop computers in
their classroom creating a PowerPoint presentation on their state. At the end of
the month, they started another PowerPoint presentation on a country. The 4th
graders came into the computer lab to work on this presentation several times.
Interesting facts about their country were found on the Internet, too.
