August 2008  The Fifth Graders started the year out with keyboarding. Make sure to check their report cards at mid-terms and at the end of the quarter to see how many keyboarding lessons they did in the first nine weeks. We're just getting used to a different routine right now. The children are coming to computer class on Mondays and Wednesdays from 12:20-12:50, right after lunch and recess. Then they come on Friday mornings from 9:15-9:45 AM. They still seem to enjoy their FREE PLAY on Fridays.

September 2008 Things are getting more sophisticated now that they are in 5th grade. They continue to work in the 4th grade workbooks because it did NOT get finished this past year. So they are now studying about databases and creating one. Then they are learning how to sort a database by fields. It's a little different; but they need to have this experience. They used MS Works 7 as this is a simple database, unlike Access.

October 2008  The 5th graders continue to keyboard with some students having trouble completing keyboarding lessons. Please check their report cards on TeacherEase to see how many lessons they completed at mid-terms and at the end of the quarter. Some need to be working on a keyboarding software at home, if possible. The software orders that are sent home each month usually have at least one or two different programs that can be used at home. Let me know if you need a software program and I can make a recommendation. We continue to work in our 4th grade workbooks and have finished the section on Databases. They are almost done with Spreadsheets and about to create two charts. Soon they will be starting the 5th grade workbooks.

November 2008   The 5th graders have started their 5th grade workbooks and read about computers in general. "A Science Fair" is what we're studying about this year in our workbooks!  Page 10 of our workbook went into depth about Input, Processing, and Output. The children used Kid Pix 4 to create a chart with 4 different machines. The trick was to find the right graphic for each machine. Some of the empty spaces text was just typed in, which was O.K. They seem to really enjoy the program "Kid Pix 4". Hardware was a topic studied in the workbook. Hope all had a Happy Thanksgiving!

December 2008   The Keyboard, the Mouse, the Monitor, and the Printer were the next interesting pieces of hardware discussed in their workbooks. Software and Tool Software were mentioned also in their workbooks. They discovered that at TGS, we have many different software programs that we use for Tool Software. On December 11, the 5th graders intently watched a downloaded video from UnitedStreaming about Pearl Harbor. They seemed to thoroughly enjoy it. To end the month, the children made a Christmas card for you parents using Publisher03. They were very creative and I hope that you enjoyed and saved them. Have a Very Merry Christmas!

January 2009  Your sweetheart children learned about GUIs (pronounced gooeys) and ended the unit by completing a Crossword Puzzle on page 20. They will discuss tabs and justifications. After completing page 24 by putting the correct words in the blank, they will copy this letter into a Word 2003 document using the proper tabs and justifications--right-align, center, and left align. They even type a nested paragraph.

The 5th Graders are word processing their reports for Ranger Kathy. They are learning how to use tabs, indents, and justifications. What?? Ask them about it!  They are finding information on a specific animal. The Internet will be used for this purpose.
