August 2008
The new Middle School students, the 6th graders,
will have computers three times a week for 45 minutes. They will have it on
Tues., Thurs., and Friday. The new schedule will NOT affect their computer
times. Just a reminder about how your child gets a computer grade as a middle
school student. For the 1st semester, assignments are worth 75% and keyboarding
is worth 25%. The 2nd semester assignments are worth 50% and keyboarding is
worth 50% . So assignments the first semester should be done with greater
accuracy for a better grade. Please help your child to understand this. Thank
you!

are still trying to finish their 5th grade workbooks. They started studying
Databases and created one using MS Works 7, which is a very simple program to
use. By the way, if your email address has changed and you'd like it to be
changed in TeacherEase, put your email address on a sheet of paper and give it
to your child with instructions to give it to me. I can then change it for you
so you don't miss any important information about your child. Thank you in
advance for keeping this current!

September 2008
We are still studying Databases from the 5th
grade workbook and will
soon be discussing spreadsheets using Excel 2003. The children are trying to
understand this complex concept. It's not real easy!! But they are all
trying--an A for effort! This year because they are in Middle School, their computer
grades are calculated a little differently. For the first semester (quarters 1
and 2), their assignments will count as 75% of their computer grade. Keyboarding
will count as 25% of their computer grade. At the beginning of the 2nd semester,
this will change to 50% assignments and 50% keyboarding. So for the first
semester, each 6th grader needs to really work hard on getting a high accuracy
on their assignments, which are done during class either on the computer or in
the workbook. Please help your child understand this about their computer grade.
Thank you for your help!

October 2008
The 6th graders are busy keyboarders! We are still working on Databases and
Spreadsheets. We just completed making a pie chart and will soon be creating a
column chart. Next year, as a 7th grader, the children will go through Excel
2003 step-by-step to learn about spreadsheets in more detail as it will be
needed for Science Fair. At the beginning of the 2nd quarter, every Thursday
during computer class the 6th graders will meet with Mrs. Ketner, our new Social
Worker, for a special program. This should last for 6 weeks. So we have less time to complete assignments.
The end of the first quarter is coming soon!! Please give us
teachers a few days to complete all grades on TeacherEase. Thank you!

November 2008
We are now working on Spreadsheets using the
software program, Excel 2003. They learned how to create labels and insert data.
Creating a chart was a lot of fun using the data from their spreadsheet. Hope all had a Happy Thanksgiving!

December 2008
Yes! We finally finished the 5th grade workbook. Learning all about Excel
2003 was not the easiest; but they have now been exposed to it. Next year they
will be using Excel 2003 for their Science Fair project. Now they started "A
Class Business" while learning about tool software and word processing! This is
the theme of the 6th grade workbook. Let's think of some some ideas for our
business--and make some money!! Yes!!
Hope you enjoyed the Christmas card that
your child made for you using Publisher03. Have a Very
Merry Christmas!!

January 2009
The 6th graders are really whipping through the 6th grade workbook. They just
finished page 10 which was a review of what they learned. We will soon be
studying about Hardware, the Keyboard, the Mouse, Monitors and Printers,
Software, and GUIs. Let's keep moving quickly so we don't have to finish this
workbook next year!!

February 2009
"Scrambled Letters" on page 32 finished the
unit on Word Processing. Some of the students hurried through this assignment
and their scores show that. We just started Desktop Publishing by copying two
pages of shapes and gluing them onto one page. They will be creating a catalog
page using a headline, some text, and a graphic or two. Once this is done on
actual sheets of paper, they will transfer this over to a software program and
create their catalog page, front and back. But first, each person will have to
decide what the topic will be and what is to be written about it. So the end
product of the desktop publishing may not be completed until after Christmas.
