August 2008
The 7th grade schedule will be different
this year. Since switching from a Jr. High to a Middle School, the 7th and 8th
graders will have four different exploratory classes for the year, each one
lasting for nine weeks. The schedule is not finalized yet; but this is known.
The 7th graders will have either the exploratory class or computers. So in a two
weeks time period, the students will have computers five times. This also means
that they will no longer have a whole period of FREE PLAY, as in the past. They
will have to meet deadlines for projects for computer class and for other
classes like Science Fair. I am very excited about this new change and will
encourage students to embrace this new Middle School concept, too! They will start keyboarding
right where they left off last year. Please check their grades in TeacherEase to
see how many lessons or WPM (words per minute) your child has completed by
mid-term and again at the end of the quarter. This year we will be studying
about spreadsheets, using Excel 2003, which is needed for Science Fair. If you
have any questions about it, please email me or contact me at TGS. Just a
reminder about how your child gets a computer grade as a middle school student.
For the 1st semester, assignments are worth 75% and keyboarding is worth 25%.
The 2nd semester assignments are worth 50% and keyboarding is worth 50% . So
assignments the first semester should be done with greater accuracy for a better
grade. Please help your child to understand this. Thank you!

September 2008
The 7th grade finished their 6th grade
workbook. The last two sections they studied were about databases and
spreadsheets. Because the 7th graders are participating in the Science Fair this
year, they will study in great detail about spreadsheets using Excel 2003. With
the person sitting next to them, each student goes through an Activity and
follows the directions on the Activity. Many of them are saved to be worked on
in the next Activity. Some of them must be printed, which is done during class.
Details are VERY important in studying about spreadsheets. If one number is off,
it can create a spreadsheet that is wrong which can result in a poor grade which
can affect both a Computer grade and a Science grade. So be very careful, 7th
graders!!!

October
2008 The 7th graders are continuing to improve
their keyboarding skills.
They are experiencing something
new this year--the SCIENCE FAIR!!
They are already working on it. They have looked up information on the Internet for their Science
Fair topic. They were to have all 7 references by a certain date this month.
Please see the deadline given to them by Mrs. Wenzel. Their
reference page will be due soon after which will be typed in computer class.

November 2008
The 7th graders took an Excel Test, multiple
choice, and an Excel Terms test during the month. There was a study guide for them to
use for the tests, which I'm sure some of the 7th graders used. The students also did three
sessions of 5 minute timings and did quite well. (It's amazing how a piece of
candy motivates a person!) The Science Fair has been the MOST important work
done in the computer lab this month. The Reference sheet was completed and index
cards were written from this sheet. Hope all had a Happy Thanksgiving!

December 2008
This month the 7th graders have been typing
their Science Fair Report--the main meat of the Science Fair. Their rough draft
was due Dec. . Then they spent a few days on their Purpose and Hypothesis,
Procedures, and Safety and Endorsement sheets. Just for fun they
are creating an awesome Christmas present for their parents. So please act
surprised and love it to death! They were done with lots of love and lots of
time! Have a Very Merry Christmas!
