Student of the Week

Every student will get  the opportunity to be the student of the week and display their personal information and pictures in the window display outside of the first grade classroom.  When it is your child's turn, your child will bring home a baggie of shapes.  Inside the baggie is an information page.  For example:  What is your favorite book?  Write the title on the book shape.  I would recommend using a black sharpie marker on the shapes so that it can be seen.  Please send a lot of pictures to be posted. (Especially a family photo, and a photo of your child).  You may send in a few small items (Barbie, match box car etc.) to be placed in the window.

Accelerated Reading

Accelerated Reading will begin in the fall in first grade.  Accelerated Reading is a computer program that utilizes a computer for a multiple choice comprehension quiz.  In first grade each "AR" book is worth 1/2 point.  My goal is for all students to reach the 10 point board.  When the student has earned 5 AR points, then their star is put up outside the first grade classroom.  When the child has earned 10 AR points, then their star is put up on the big AR board across from the cafeteria.

I will send a note home when your child is ready to start taking AR tests.  Your child will start with the first AR book titled:  Jax and the van.  Listen to your child read the story to you.  Please ask your child questions about what happened in the story.  For example:  What did dad put in the van?  Send a note to school stating your child is ready for an AR test (you may write on the paper book).  First grade has AR testing time on everyday except Wednesday.  After your child takes the first test then your child may continue taking AR tests.  I would recommend taking at least one test a week.  Only one book at a time will be allowed (no taking two tests at once).

This program is used from 1st grade thru 8th grade.  As the entire school reaches goals set throughout the year, rewards are given (popcorn party, ice cream party).  At the end of the year, if the entire school reaches the AR goal, then a bigger reward will take place.  Every first grade student that has earned 10 points or more may participate.

Spelling

Spelling test will be on Friday of each week.  A spelling list will be sent home for 5-6 weeks at a time.  Please practice with your child.  Some ideas of how to practice are:  riding in the car, magnetic letters on the refrigerator, writing each word 3-5 times.

We will start with 6 words, and gradually work up to 10 words.

Homework Hints

When I assign homework, I will stamp the paper with a "homework" stamp, and a parent signature stamp.  Please sign your name and have your child return it the next day.  I would like the parent's to sign the homework so that I know that you know your child had homework, and you know they did it.

The homework I assign should take about 15 minutes to do.

Shoebox Project

Each child will be asked to decorate a shoebox (with a lid) at home and return it to school.  This will be a library box for your child.  The vocabulary words that come home each week should be kept in here as well as the weekly story.

Reading

Every week your child will make vocabulary word cards.  These should be brought home on Monday.  Every week your child will bring home a paper story.  Your child should read this story to you.  Please sign it and have your child return it to school.  I have given you a list of stories in order.  Please keep this, because when your child begins AR testing then you can keep track of what tests they have taken.
